Thyroid Diet Plans

Thyroid diet plans are important for those experiencing thyroid problems. The thyroid plays a key role in regulating your body’s metabolism and energy levels. Thyroid problems, therefore, can have a huge impact on your health. Following a smart thyroid diet plan gives your thyroid what it needs for maximum efficiency, especially if weight loss is one of your goals.

The thyroid works by changing iodine from the food you eat into thyroid hormones. These hormones control the way your body burns energy. If your diet isn’t supplying a balanced amount of iodine, thyroid problems will result.

When your thyroid isn’t producing enough hormones, the condition is called hypothyroidism. It is also commonly called underactive thyroid or low thyroid. When your thyroid is over-producing hormones, you’ll have hyperthyroidism. This condition is also known as overactive thyroid, or high thyroid.

Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism have a number of causes, but hypothyroidism can be influenced more by what you eat – or don’t eat – as part of your diet.

Thyroid diet foods If you have low thyroid, or underactive thyroid, your doctor may prescribe certain supplements. But you can also increase the percentage of certain foods you eat which provide the iodine you need for your thyroid to produce enough hormones.

A healthy thyroid diet plan is often rich in protein. Most glands are made of protein, so protein is an essential part of effective thyroid diet plans.

Other thyroid diet foods include:

iodized salt, sea salt, most fresh fish, fish oil, sea weeds/kelp, eggs, and certain kinds of cheese.
green leafy vegetables,
foods that contain a lot of fatty acids, such as almonds, walnuts, whole grains, lean meat, milk and egg whites.

Foods with selenium contain anti-oxidants, anti-aging and anti-cancer enzymes. Selenium is present in various natural forms such as cereals like rice, corn and wheat, Brazil nuts and walnuts, onions, oats, garlic, and soybeans.

Chicken, beef and certain kinds of fish contain selenium too. But keep in mind, selenium can have side effects if you eat too much of it. Too much, in this case, means around 400 mg.

Certain vitamins are excellent for avoiding thyroid problems. These include vitamin A, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, vitamin B6 and vitamin C. Foods that supply these vitamins include bananas, bok choy, broccoli, cantaloupe, carrots, egg yolks, figs, oranges, and spinach,

Low thyroid diet Someone with hypothyroidism follow a low thyroid diet plan. This means they should stay away from

sugar,
junk food and fast food (especially fried fast food),
vegetables like cauliflower and mustard that contain high amount of iron.

Someone on a low thyroid diet plan should also avoid alcohol.

As you can tell, there are lots of foods to eat and many to avoid on a thyroid diet. It can be confusing, so it’s important to talk to your doctor and formulate a diet plan that works best to help you prevent thyroid problems.
