Eating out and eating out healthy can be a challenge, especially for teenagers. In this video, teens discuss how to eat out healthy at the mall’s food court restaurants. This video is part of a nutrition lesson for middle school students from Dairy Council of California called Exercise Your Options (More information and materials at In addition to a lively conversation among teens about how to eat out healthy, the important topic of whether skipping meals is a healthy weight loss strategy is discussed as well as the phenomenal increase in portion sizes over the years. Many teens do not realize, for example, just how large portions for fries and soda have become, or that there is approximately one ounce of sugar in every ounce of soda so that an extra large soda of forty two ounces can contain approximately that many ounces of refined sugar. That said, the emphasis is on healthy nutrition choices without vilifying any type of food, encouraging modest portion sizes, and reminding teens that they should make healthy food choices without being afraid of any food choice, including snacks.
